feave

Source of Inspiration

feave is an application inspired by the rich and colourful tradtional woven textiles of Indonesia. These textiles are culturally significant and tells us various information such as the wearers’ political alliances, cosmic beliefs and social hierachies. Simple straight coloured threads gradually grow and become large pieces of beautiful and informational textiles with the magic of weaving.

The photo on the left show the traditional painstakingly slow method of weaving the ikat strand by strand. Thousands of thread run horizontally and vertically to form the whole textile. Individually the threads mean nothing, but when they are weaved together, the images and patterns form start to tell a beautiful story.

The Concept

Social networks are indeed digitised versions of the weaving of the universe in this point of time and Facebook is currently the most popular website for such. People are constantly interacting with each other, sharing and discussing. Little bits of stories between people, numbers growing like individual strands of threads in the process of being woven. feave is a concept that aims to show these information in a beautiful manner, similar to the ikat, that small part of the universe but at the same time represent the universe as these small bits are like blocking blocks of this universe.

The data weaves generated by feave is a reminder to all, that we are individually a small part of the universe but are all equally important in collectively creating this universe and what we share.

feave runs on the ideas of connection, interaction and links. It is an online application that allows maximum flexibility for different users and purposes and can be used for different social network websites. It is seperated into personal and commerical usages.

feave aims to ultimately connect people in real life together too.

It’s a beautifully connected world.

The Application

What small data weaves generated by the feave application are merely small bits and closeups of the weaving of the universe are reflected in the logo, which is based on the idea of how a magnified close up of a weaved ikat with threads running horizontal and vertical would look like. At the same time, it reminds us of the building blocks in the digital world, pixels.

feave can be applied to personal and commercial purposes. Users are given full flexibility in creating the data weave with the information they specifically need.

Personal:
feave allows users to track certain interactions between friends from Facebook and turn the information into an informative weave of connections between the selected people from the user’s network. Also, specific information can be collected from networks such as Linkedin and allow users to find services or people around them easily when information is presented visually in a data weave.

The feave application features mainly for personal usage, the ability to obtain information from Facebook about user’s interaction with friends through the user’s connection to Facebook while using this application. It is a very simple, clean and user-friendly application to even the ones who are not internet savvy. Colours are randomly selected from pre-defined sets of colour templates. The colour templates are created with visibility as utmost importance.

Below is a visual walkthrough of launching the feave application for Facebook from feave.net in a pop-up window. The application is launched directly from feave’s official website (which will be shown later).

Closeup of the beautiful weaves created by the feave applicaion:

The finished feave will allow users to share on Facebook and Twitter which in turn will generate more publicity and number of people exposed to the application will increase. The application will therefore fulfil its purpose of connecting people and reminding people of the beauty of every single connection.

The front of the card will show a close up of their connection amidst a selected network and the back will contain information about the connections and the variables that made the connection between them. The idea is to generate some light hearted and fun discussions and of course, connect people in real life.

3) Send in your customized feave to us and we’ll have it custom printed and sent back to your mailbox! Charges for printing and delivery will be advised accordingly. Yes, feave delivers worldwide too. Generate fun discussion everywhere you go when you bring with you a snapshot of your life’s connections when you go out.

All bonus features serve as mementos, a snapshot of someone’s life in that particular time, how one is connected and others are to one.

Additional notes in structure of the feaves created by the application:
– Lines connecting people have to straight to recreate the straight lines of thread forming traditional textiles.
– Lines have to be as colourful and beautiful as the lovely ikats.
– Variables are limited at 3 as the average traditional textile avoid using too many colours due to the amount of labour that has to do into making the textile.

Commercial:
feave allows commercial entities to track for reactions or discussion on products or services by running searches on keywords. This is mainly for them to conduct market research. For example, to track the success of a certain advertisement video released on the Internet, the company can run a search using keywords, how much it is discussed among people and how many people viewed and shared it. The data presented in a visual weave is easy to understand and makes for a much more interesting read. Furthermore, the weaves could be released publicly as another level of information for the public to view the success of the advertisement, generate discussion and create more awareness of the advertisement.

Below is an example of feave used for market research on discussion of movies (Rapunzel, Megamind, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) in the months Nov 2010 to Dec 2010 on Facebook. The sample size consists of 20-30 year olds, both genders and taken from a small pool of university students in NTU ADM Year 3.

No matter how and who uses the application, feave serves as a reminder how people are connected and how these connections tell us about us.

feave also boosts a standalone website that houses the applications and is connected to Facebook to grab necessary information to create feaves for personal and commerical uses. Below shows a series of screenshots of the website. Having an official website mainly to update the community with news is essential to the advancement of the feave application as feedback from users is very important to us. Also it is a place where feave users can connect.
